Teaching
In recent times, I have realized that sharing some of what I know is actually more fun than learning or doing. And of course, some people want a more formal kind of teaching interaction from me. Or maybe you just like listening to me when I ramble about… well, just about anything 😉. To each their own, I guess. In any case, I have come up with a simple solution.
This is by no means standard teaching. It is more of an old-fashioned learning style, where people follow their own interests with the help of a teacher, rather than being forced into standard curriculums.
I know a bit about learning and a bit about a few topics. I offer instruction about subjects I might know, or even about learning in general. Anything I know, I am happy to talk about. I am not a professor and I will not teach masterclasses. Instead, I will point you to books you can read, resources you can access, or suggest activities that are related to whatever you are learning. Efficient learning is mostly self-driven, so I am only helping you with that.
And of course, if you just want to check in regularly with me about your learning journey and ask occasional questions, well, I guess that’s fine too.
Teaching Structure
The year is split into three 9-week blocks (or sessions).
And here is a breakdown of how a standard week will look like:
- We will interact weekly (50 minutes) via Zoom or Skype.
- Depending on what you are working on, I can point you in the direction of content you can read or watch, answer questions on the topic, or sometimes (definitely not always) give you a theoretical overview of one particular subject or concept.
- If you want and if it is relevant, I can even set you activities to do during the week to help with your learning. If applicable, I will look at some of your work for the week and offer feedback.
- And of course, pomodoro! You are free to join me for a pomodoro session once or twice a week, in a coworking-style environment. It is sometimes easier to concentrate alongside other people. We just set a timer, each of us focuses on their own stuff, and we can chat during short breaks - or just stay quiet. It is all about getting stuff done.
Approximate dates for each session are:
- Fall Session, mid-October to mid-December.
- Winter Session, February and March.
- Spring Session, mid-April to mid-June.
Dates may change from year to year.
Suggested fees are US $3000 per year, split into three equal payments (due a week after each session end date, but only due if you have found our interactions useful, and only if you can afford it). You can sign up before the start of any of the above terms. Don’t worry if you cannot afford it; the fees can be waived entirely.
2025 Themes
Themes are just topics you might want me to help you with. I have pursued various interests for most of my life. However, I am not omniscient and I do not come from Krypton. Knowledge is sometimes fresh in my mind, and sometimes it is not as fresh. And I obviously cannot teach about matters I am not well-versed at.
Some of these topics are:
- Creative Writing, particularly with a science fiction or fantasy flair, or set in a rich historical setting. This is not about me line-editing your work nor reading your novel; that would be useless without proper guidance. Instead, I will usually ask you to write specific scenes that can help you develop your writing skills, and offer feedback.
- Programming that is not focused on any specific languages, nor on any programs you may be working on. I can help with basic coding skills, thinking skills, and problem-solving skills.
- Language Learning, because people think that learning languages is hard. I will not teach you how to speak a language, but I can help you spot the grammatical and communication patterns that you need for whatever language you are learning. I have only learned European languages, so I might not be able to help as much with anything that originated outside of Europe.
- Foundational Mathematics and Physics, because quite a few people still think that maths and physics are hard. Don’t expect me to chat about complex maths, though. If you can do graduate-level maths or physics, you do not need me. And if that is the case, I will probably not remember any of it as well as you do. This is for people who want to learn concepts that they were not ready to learn back in the day.
- Logic, Philosophy, Sociology, and Ethics, but not in a traditional way. Philosophers' names or theories are not relevant in this context. Instead, we can focus on analyzing how the world works and how people function. This is great for creative writing, too.
- Learning in general is a fun one. If you are open to different avenues to expand your mind, try learning with no limits. We can work on analytical thinking, reasoning, rhethoric, brain training, or learning to enjoy learning.
You may get me to talk about other subjects too; don’t be shy to ask.
Eligibility
- I must know you well enough. If not, you should be looking for teachers elsewhere, not among random people you barely know.
- My teaching style has to be compatible with your personality. Otherwise, we would be doing one another a disservice.
- Minimum age: 25. I might consider younger people on a case-by-case basis, but younger people should be learning elsewhere. Go to university, learn on your own, find your way.
- Fluency in either English or Spanish.
- You must be interested in expanding your horizons and improving in different areas of your life.
- You must be willing to improve your personality and coherence, because manners maketh man.
- No jargon and no fancy words. If you want to use complex words and facts to obscure the meaning of your sentences, I am not the right fit for you.
- And a positive, constructive attitude. Learning works best with a positive mindset.
My time is limited and I only accept people who are a good fit for this dynamic. And sometimes, I am just too busy to teach anyone new.
